No pictures this weekend. I was 15 minutes down the road from work headed toward the woods on Friday when I realized the phone was in my toolbox. That is 10 more minutes past my turn around point for retrieving a phone for a long weekend away and 14 minutes past the turn around point on a weekday. I got a buddy in the woods...I borrowed his phone to text Amy that I would be back on Sunday. That was the end of caring about a phone. Matt stayed over on Friday and we hunted on Saturday. We didn't get one but had a great time. The calls were very helpful. I can turn the ducks and get them to give us a second look. We did that several times. We also brought some activity in that I don't think would have otherwise come in. The ducks were high and we have to improve our cover because they bailed out just out of reach. I have an idea for a blind cover. I bought some supplies and will build it next weekend.
I made a necklace for my calls using a snake knot and paracord. There is room to add more if needed.
It is Sunday night and I am making jerky. It has been a long time. I use very lean ground beef(93%) You don't need all the fancy commercial garbage to do this. I roll out the meat with a rolling pin after seasoning it with some seasoning salt (I don't buy fancy cures or specialy dehydration seasoning.) You just have to take the moisture out of it so the bacteria can't live. Lean meat makes this easier. I cut the rolled out ground beef into strips with a knife. You don't need the press guns that need to be cleaned to do this. Take the strips and put them in the oven or in the dehydrator.
Matt stayed at the shack with me Friday and Saturday nights. We went duck hunting on Saturday at the 40. I got a small duck. We have things dialed in pretty good now. The cover was so good that the ducks landed in with the decoys. When they got up I got my duck. I dressed it in the boat and we put in on a spit over the coals on Saturday night. The duck was good. Both nights were clear with a waning gibous moon. It is cool when you cast a shadow at 2:00 A.M. I bought a duck commander mallard hen call when I got back on Sunday. I have a short video of me messing with the call on the way home. I do a feeder chuckle (contented clucking) at the end.
I took Tuesday and Wednesday off of work. My goal was to clear almost a 1/4 mile of trail and make a clearing that will eventually be used for camping and my next shack. I used a chainsaw loppers, and machete. I am really learning to appreciate the machete as a tool. It is light, easy to pack and versatile. The weather was beautiful on Wednesday and I got a lot done. I have picures showing the trail and campsite clearing. I am waiting for my culvert and approach to be installed. It should be done in the next couple of weeks.
My buddy Greg went duck hunting with me this weekend. We hunted the 40. He stayed with me in the shack on Friday night. It was a beatiful night and the weather was great.
I spent Thursday night through Sunday at the shack. My friend, Matt spent Friday and Saturday night with me at the shack. We went duck hunting on my 40 on Saturday. The ducks were all over but they just were not moving. We still had a lot of fun. I spent Friday afternoon clearing trails and tent pads on my new camping/hunting land. I should have a new appoach and culvert in a few weeks.
I spent the weekend at my buddy Tom's place. He has a little cabin in northern Wisconsin. It is so beautiful up there. I stayed outside in my swag tent....it was ok because the animals and trains kept me company.
