Amy and I went for a walk on Staring Lake on Saturday. It was a nice day with lots of sun. I stayed at the shack on Saturday night. It got down to about 5 above. It was 70 in the shack. The moon was almost new but it was still bright because of all the snow. The parking is not ideal because the snow does not allow me to get my car to the shack. The road I am off is minimum maintenance and does not get plowed. It is a quarter mile pulling a loaded sled which is not the problem. The problem is having to dig the car into a no maintenance road where it draws attention from any one using the local gravel road. Even a truck can not pass during some months. This was all considered when I purchased the new 20 acres. I will not have to deal with this as I have an apprach right off of a maintained road. My car will be behind a gate even in the winter. The last picture is of a filet board I just built today. I bought the clamp from Amazon and cut a 4 X 10 poly board for descaling panfish. The board will fit in a small tackle box and is more convenient than store bought boards.
About a week ago Crow Wing County approved my permit. I have been planning ever since for this summer's build. I may move my current trailer to the new 20 so I have time for more construction. I will need to reinforce the trailer and add the axles in order to move it. Before I do that I need to build the driveway and gravel pad. In a month or two I will probably build the small wood stove to heat the building. When these projects are done I want a path between the fist clump of trees and the main five acres. I have a picture below to show where the gravel foot path will be. It will have to be about an 1/8 of a mile long.
I went fishing on Starring Lake today. I drilled one hole and found I was too shallow. I drilled another hole 30 feet further from shore to what I figured was just ouside the weed line. It was in about 10 feet of water. I dropped an orange jig head in with a chunk of night crawler still on the hook from yesterday. I pulled out a 33 inch northern. I had 8 pound mono on a cheap pole with no leader. I can't believe I got it out. I figured this would be another fish story nobody would believe. About 7 minutes after I arrived....I left with my fish.
Matt, Tom, and I fished Mille Lacs lake on Saturday. We did not do well. It seemed like there were no fish in the lake. We drilled a dozen holes and spent the afternoon with a single small perch to show for it. Then we hit the casino. The last two pictures are of the new 20 acres. I have it all staked out for my permit application with Crow Wing county. Hopefully I will here from them this week. I should have a lot to do this summer. The permit is for a trailer placement and a driveway.
Matt and I checked out a property in Kanabec County that he was interested in. We stopped at the shack and dropped off some firewood. There is a bunch of snow up north. Our main goal was to stake off the 20 acre lot for the driveway and trailer placement. I applied for a land use permit when I got home. Hopefully the snow will hold off so the county specialist can see the stakes. I should know if they granted the permit by the end of the week.
