February 28th 2021

It is a quiet snowy Sunday morning at home.

It was a nice night. The shack was plenty warm. Time to shoot. The first picture shows the 1858 new army with 5 holes loaded. This is how it was normally done so that the hammer would sit on the dead hole. I seal the ball with bore butter. The second picture shows my grouping after two cylinders. Five shots were off hand and five were supported.I need to take a file to the front site to bring the grouping up. I am pleased with how accurate it shoots. I take a shot in the last video.

Sunset is not till about 6:00, so I decided to leave for the shack after work. It was a beautiful night with a full moon. It's still February, but the cabin started at just under 40 and warmed fairly quickly to 60. The top bunk was a bit warmer yet. It's still cold enough to use the old natural ice box.

I picked up this 1858 army today. It is a single action black powder revolver in 44 caliber.

It will be a fairly warm day today so I am going to take a day trip to the cabin. I woke up this Saturday morning to find my doggy laying in the sunshine.

I brought the muzzle loader and 1873 single action army revolver today. I put a bunch of shots on paper. For playing around I've been running .454 wadded balls with 50 grains of powder. At close range they don't group too bad...so they will be my goofing around load. The 22 revolver does respectable enough shooting the target at the same distance.(Both with peep sights) The target is the square in the background.

The round balls did some damage to my log backdrop. I really noticed it with the 90 grain sabot shot.

I recorded a walk from the start of my property to the cabin. You can see my sled trail to get the gear to the shack.

It hit about 12 degrees above zero, so I took the day off and went to the cabin up North. I warmed up the cabin and spent the snowy afternoon listening to the radio and doing some shooting. I brought an old jump seat out of a van and installed it in the cabin. It folds up when not in use which saves on space. It'll make a nice couch.

I also brought my CVA muzzleloader up today. I set up a loading station in the cabin and experimented with different loads, breech plugs, powder, pellets, balls/wads, and sabots. It was a good day. I found my favorite combos. I like using loose powder with round balls. For long shots its got to be a good tight sabot with a 100 grain load.

The cabin is a bit off the beaten path and the road to my second property is not plowed in the winter so I pull my gear in with a sled.

I usually go to the cabin every weekend. I skipped the last two because it has been about 15 to 20 below both weekends. I built a pack frame for the swag tent. I'll never pack it to far, but this will help get the tent from the kayak to the campsite. I bought the plastic pack frame from Amazon for 15 dollars. The shoulder harness is a pair of suspenders for carpenters that I purchased at Menards for 15 dollars. I added the wooden platform so that the weight was supported by the frame and not the straps.

I am getting excited for warmer weather. I have had my eye on a Kodiak Canvas swag tent. These are popular in Australia. The mattress and sleeping bag are stored and rolled up with the tent. They are small, warm, and super comfortable. You can't pack them for long distances as they are heavy and bulky to pack. I will pack it in using the kayak in the summer.
