I have stayed at the cabin just about every weekend in the summer and the winter. The winter has become my favorite time to be up here. It is absolutely beatiful and nobody else is around. Traffic on 169 is way better in the winter. Mille Lacs still gets ice fishing traffic. The cabin stays nice and warm so temp is not a problem. The first video is a tour of the finished cabin.
The following videos are of the black spruce bog adjacent to my property. They are dangerous but very interesting to explore. In the first video I cross the swamp with snow shoes. In the second video I am inside the bog and show what it is like.
I also purchased 40 acres of hunting/camping land seven miles from the cabin. The land is adjacent to 1000 acres of MN DNR hunting land. It includes an acre of high ground on this island. The island is covered with maple, oak, and birch. There is also a 3 acre pond on the property with a creek feeding the pond and one leaving the pond. The video is a short tour of the 40 acres.
I found a family business in Crosslake MN that sells and customizes kayaks molded right here in the state. They are called Crow Wing Kayaks. I bought a model from them and did some late season kayaking. These pictures were taken on Crosslake.
I built a small trailer and removed the springs and
axle to make it look more like a cabin. I pulled the trailer to the build site and started the cabin
build. Every weekend I brought a few more supplies and I set goals for that weekend.
1. Level frame and build platform.
2. Frame sides and sheet sides.
3. Cut rafters/sheet roof and shingle.
4. Fascia and windows/door.
5. Vinyl trim prep undersill and j trim
6. Vinyl siding.
7. Interior work over several weekends.
I stuck mostly to the plan. I took every other Wednesday off for a few months to keep on schedule.
It was a great diversion from some unnamed awfulness of 2020 :-)
The cabin sits on the two lots next to 300 acres of black spruce bog.
It has a couple of bunks and off grid electricity. There are lots of bear and deer in the area.
I purchased two lots close to Mille Lacs Lake in the winter/spring of 2020. I started clearing a spot for a trailer I planned to build during the summer. The first two pictures are of a micro camper that I built so that I had a place to stay when working on the shack/cabin.
